For much of the 1990s this photograph defined how Panos Pictures had moved away from the confines of environment and development images towards a broader coverage of political, social and economic issues. The boy appears to be looking straight at us, having felt empowered to speak at a political rally where the world’s media were in attendance. It embodied the idea of giving a voice to the poor and marginalised.
