Over the past two decades, photojournalism has faced many threats to its place in the media and cultural landscape. Television – and now the internet – has forced the profession to constantly reinvent itself.
Perhaps the greatest challenge is that news photography is no longer the exclusive preserve of the professional photographer. Digital cameras and the mobile phone have put paid to that. But what these photographs lack - and what photojournalists offer - is a sense of authorship.
The narrative has always been at the heart of Panos Pictures. We started out as a filing cabinet full of miscellaneous snaps brought back by staff from their travels. Over the years we have grown into a highly respected agency.
And we have retained our mission of seeking out the untold stories of those without a voice, and to provide fresh perspectives on the world. Here is just a small sample of images from our award-winning collection.
