Driving change through rural radio debate in Uganda. Panos Eastern Africa's rural radio debate project in Uganda aims to strengthen rural people's participation in democracy. The project began in late 2009 working with 20 radio partner stations around the country piloting a new methodology. Panos Eastern Africa supports the radio stations to hold debates in communities on development, governance and political process that are generally selected by the communities themselves. Radio station staff moderate the debates in which communities engage with local leaders, office holders, experts and NGOs. The debates are broadcast and extended with Studio debates and phone -in programmes.
